FAMIS and Medicaid for Children

FAMIS is Virginia’s health insurance program for children. It provides access to quality health services for children who do not have health insurance. FAMIS Plus is Virginia’s name for children’s Medicaid. Medicaid for Children also provides great benefits and covers children in families with low or no income, even if the children are covered by health insurance. Both programs have full benefits. There are no enrollment costs or monthly premiums. A child must usually be a US citizen (some non-citizens also qualify) to be covered by these programs but a parent’s citizenship is not considered.

When you apply for coverage, your children will be considered for both FAMIS and Medicaid for Children. The first program your child is evaluated for is FAMIS Plus (formerly Medicaid) through the Department of Family Services: 703-324-3000

The Medical Care for Children Partnership (MCCP)

The Medical Care for Children Partnership (MCCP) offers low-income families a reduced-cost health care program for children up to age 18. Citizenship not required. Your child may qualify to receive MCCP medical care if you live in Fairfax County or the Cities of Fairfax or Falls Church and you:

  • Cannot pay for doctor visits or medicine for your children
